Update Firmware on Microsemi SAS Controller

This is a short overview on how to update the Firmware on my Microsemi 1100-16i HBA (Update on your own risk). I don’t recommend updating if you don’t have any problems but my Firmware was almost 3 years old and i didn’t have any data on the disks yet.

First Download the Firmware and install the maxView Storage Manager. Then start it and LogIn with the local Administrator of the system. On the website select the controller on the left side. Select Update Firmware in the System section. Select flashing options and the new Firmware. Restart the system when the update is finished.

My new Board (Asus Pro WS X570-ACE)

My last Server-Board was an Asrock X570M Pro4. This Board had an issue with powering on and energy saving options so i returned it for a replacement. In the meantime i decided to buy me a more suitable board, the ASUS Pro WS X570-ACE, which is designed for a more professional work environment having 3 PCI-E 4.0 x8 Slots. Currently i have a RTX2060, my SAS Host Adapter and my 10Gbit network card on it. So far it runs stable. A minor issue so far: If i insert a graphics card and have no monitor attached to it, the onboard speaker reports an error beeping 1x long and 3x short, which signals a problem with the graphics card. You can change the BIOS config to not halt on errors (and wait for pressing F1 key) and continue. This unfortunately does not change the beep behavior. If I’m happy with the stability and the configuration i will run it headless, without a graphics card (i will come back to this later…).

Moving Tiered Storage Spaces to another Computer

Yesterday i moved my storage space from using onboard Sata to my Raid Controller on a different Board (Asus Pro WS X570-ACE). This went surprisingly painless and without any issues. So i can confirm that you can move your storage space to another computer even when using different controllers. I also added two more SSDs.

Automation of backup jobs

Today i want to start automating my tasks. This time i want to automate a backup task written in Python. In general the script collects mySQL database exports in zip-format and copies them into a folder which is then protected with a raid and a backup. I’m using a python script on the Windows Tasks Scheduler for this job.

See my wiki for a how to.

My old Nas

This is my old NAS based on an Intel Core i3-6100 from 2016. The system is using 5 Seagate NAS HDDs (ST4000VN000) in a storage space configuration using raid 5 mode. It was reliable, quiet and it ran almost 5 years without any issue. However it was too slow and i needed more space. It will serve as a playground for my future Youtube videos and maybe later as a backup machine.

New HBA has arrived

Finally i received my new Microsemi HBA 1100-16i SAS Controller. Now i can begin with setting up my hyperconverged server. This host bus adapter offers 4×4 internal Sata/SAS channels. Together with the ports from the mainboards this should be more than enough for any upgrades in the next few years.
